11: Reading minds with Carl Christman, Game Changer in Communication

Carl Christman – teacher, best-selling author, and speaker.
He plays with language, psychology and non-verbal communication to educate and entertain audiences. His best-selling book How to Read Minds and Influence People explores communication from a radically different perspective. It unlocks the science of reading people and helps people harness the power of persuasion. He offers participants the tools to relate to people and positively influence them.

Why did you choose to go into “mind reading or mentalism”:

After graduate school and after I started teaching, I got this weird sense that something wasn’t right.  I was misreading the students cues in what they are thinking and feeling.  And I knew I had to learn how to empathize better.


What can someone do to become better at reading people?

In the book there are tips that are very specific as to what to watch for.  But, really what it comes down to is, “empathetic accuracy.”  We can often look at other people and understand what they are feeling.  Even a 3 month old baby does this.  Without analyzing someone too much, just pay attention to their expression and their body language and ask yourself if I were doing that (mirroring) what would I be feeling?


If someone says, “I just can’t understand this person no matter how hard I try” – what advice do you have?

It all comes down to making time to actually be present in conversation.  If you find that you can’t relate to someone, be honest about how much time you are putting into that relationship.  Take the time to focus on the person you are with, truly being present makes this skill attainable.


Best advice:

Take action and do it.  Whatever it is you love doing… what do you have to lose?  Go after what you love or are passionate about.


What do you believe to be absolutely true?

Relationships are the most important thing. It’s all about the people you surround yourself with.

    I really enjoyed this episode, what a great way to start my day! In a life that is so hectic and filled with multitasking and distractions, this discussion helped me to bring clarity and focus back to concentrating on improving all of my relationships by truly listening to people in the moment. Some great insight on learning to understand myself better, and not hesitating to take action in my life, to truly live the life I want to lead…can’t wait to read the book!

    “The Carl Christman interview was provocative particularly when I thought about reading people in business. Don’t you think that a lot of business people’s ego gets in the way of seeing and hearing what is being said beyond their actual words?
