P.J.’s mission in life is simple:  “Love Deeply and Teach Others to Do the Same.” His commitment to love has earned him the title of “love guru,” which causes him to smile – and inspires him to live, love, and share more fully every day. P.J. is a life-long motivational speaker, spiritual teacher, and relationship coach – he is also the creator of “Learning to Love,” a 4 step program designed to help people reconnect with their heart and learn to love themselves, their lives, and others more completely. Despite his disability, which was expected to take his life by 7, he chose to live, and live well!  39 years later, P.J.’s a 10th degree blackbelt, martial arts and women’s self-defense instructor, meditation teacher, former wheelchair athlete, adventure-seeker, watercolorist, author, and in the National Hall of Fame for People with Disabilities! P.J. loves his life and lives every day to inspire others . . . to love theirs.

How did you get to the point of truly loving your life so deeply?

I’ve never known anything but love.  I was only expected to live to age 7.  I have a rare form of muscular dystrophy, and so this is all I’ve known.  I have always known we are all connected.  It has always been who I am to want to help others and take away their pain, in any way possible.

What do people do if they don’t know what greatness feels like, so they don’t know that things could ever be better?

Become present.  Find stillness.  This quiet calmness, brings you a state of relaxation and peace.  One way is through meditation.  If that’s too much to consider, just focus on your breath.  Allow yourself to relish in the stillness.  Become open and aware. Focus on your awareness of your senses, your surroundings.  The more you do that intentionally, you become more present. The four pillars are: being  – Open, Receptive , Aware, and having Appreciation/Gratitude.

What were you thinking right before you had to go through huge pain for the chance that it may be better on the other side?

I braced myself. There is no guarantee.  And I don’t believe in sacrifice, I believe in willing exchanges.  What are we willing to exchange?  What could happen?  You get a choice of what you want in the next moment.  Consider that in the next moment it could be far better than the one you have right.

Best Piece of Advice?

Start by looking at other people and allow yourself to feel a softness for them.  Allow that compassion to turn into love for them.  Then ask yourself how can I make this person’s life better right now?  Even a smile with a soft heart can make a tremendous difference.

What do you believe to be true?

Love is the unifying connection between all souls.
