25: Successful Goal Setting Starts With Your “Why” – with Michelle Thall, PhD – Game Changer

Michelle Thall, PhD is a core faculty member in the Department of Nutrition and Exercise Science who teaches a range of exercise science and research methods courses. Philosophy – Dr. Thall’s teaching philosophy is consistent with the GAMES model (Goal-oriented, Active, Meaningful learning focused on Explanations & Self-regulation).  Dr. Thall has dual goals: to ensure students appreciate the importance of class material in their personal and professional lives, and to be their guidepost as they grow on their journey through the educational process.


Was exercise and fitness always your passion?

I had an interest… but when I originally lead a fitness class, it came to the point where I realized I wanted to have the knowledge I felt was needed in order to make a difference through education.  That is what set me on the path I am on now.


Do you really need a big enough “why” in order to stick with anything?

Yes!  The key is self-determination.  In order for behaviors to be adopted as habit, you must find something in that habit that makes you happy.  If your “why” is some far away, external, long term goal it is unlikely that you will stick with it.  It’s just not sustainable.  You have to find something that you truly enjoy in the moment… at the time you are doing that activity.  Pay more attention to how you feel – better energy, more mental clarity, etc. rather than the number on the scale.


Best advice:

Be authentic, go with what feels authentically driven for YOU.  Live your own truth not someone else’s truth.


What you believe to be to true:

The faith that you have stabilizes you through thick and thin. It’s what sustains me and keeps me going.
