87: How To Tell Good Advice From… CRAZY!

opinions steve jobs

Well what a week it has been! As I said in this podcast, there was no shortage of the opportunity to spend time thinking about my reactions to people, situations, and unsolicited advice.  Every once in a while, something or someone shows up that makes me really contemplate the best response that is not only appropriate, but also authentic.  I think all too often we are so consumed with not ruffling feathers or making waves (something that really doesn’t pertain to me) but for most people it does.  Thus, I have been called offensively honest- and this episode is no different.

Here’s the what: How often do you stop and think about the advice or opinion someone is giving you?  Wait… better said, How often do you stop and think about “Why” you are being given the advice you are being given?  I think sometimes people carry an opinion of the world, so that their place in it, feels better.  Meaning, if someone says, “Just put that dress you can’t afford on your credit card, no one can afford the life they pretend to live, anyway.”  It’s probably fair to say, they are deeply in debt, and if you are too, it won’t feel so bad.  Further, if the belief is that everyone is, all the better.

This is part of the thought of the week for our contemplation.  If nothing else, the next time “advice” shows up at your doorstep, or in your inbox, maybe you will think about it a little bit differently.
