My focus for October (which this episode is kicking off) is about figuring out what matters, our uniqueness, and contribution. At some point the realization sets in that it’s not about the shiny new car, getting a bigger house, or your net worth. What truly matters at the end of it all, is the value you brought to others. Determining what you value and what your natural talents are- is what can make your contribution uniquely… you.
But before we do a deep dive into the means in which you can contribute, we first have to determine what really matters. It has been my experience when someone writes down everything that truly matters to them such as: their children, their extended family, and spending time with close friends- they soon realize their time doesn’t mirror any of it.
For the month of October, try this: Replace the words “have to” with “choose to.” Instead of saying you have to go to a meeting and can not attend the elementary school play, say that you are choosing to go to the meeting, instead. In these moments you will likely find that what you truly value, and that the choices you are making may not be in alignment. Now I am not saying you need to find a way to be everywhere you want to be, all the time… but what I am saying is- be clear about the choices you are making, and ensure they align with the legacy you intend to leave. I’ve never read on a tombstone, “There lies Bob, he sure made a lot of money.” (I also don’t spend a lot of time in graveyards, so who knows.)
